Family Fun

Keep your crew happy while on holiday. BC’s ski resorts offer family-friendly accommodation, and everything from Magic Carpets to mammoth verticals. Want to slide in the tube park? Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride? Roast marshmallows under the stars? We've got you covered.

SKI

Need a bunny slope for the little ones and a half-pipe for the teens? BC has the resort for you.

Drive the Powder Highway for vertical and deep powder. Panorama, RED, Whitewater, Fernie, Revelstoke, Kimberley, and Kicking Horse resorts are scattered along the route in southeast BC. Families looking for runs and activities for all ages should head to BC’s interior. Big White, Sun Peaks, Apex, and SilverStar boast champagne powder, organized activities, and a friendly vibe.

Whistler Blackcomb, on the coast, hosts professional skiers and boarders, but there are plenty of green runs and adventures to keep the little ones entertained, too. The on-mountain Magic Castle and Tree Fort are always a hit. And Mount Washington, on Vancouver Island, is known for its huge annual snowfall, with an average of 11.5 metres (38 feet).

Need a little guidance? Most resorts offer free mountain tours to help you find the right slopes, trails, parks, and glades.

LEARN

Whether you’re an experienced skier or a first-timer, there are lessons to help you hone your skills. Learn the basics, or learn to carve perfect turns, ski steeps, or ride the powder.

Beginners can choose from a private lesson or group class, and can practise new skills in designated learning zones. To take the stress out of the morning ski routine, Big White offers a door-to-ski shuttle service to transport little ones from lodging to lessons, and back again. Sun Peaks’ Sports School has lessons and camps for beginners, powder seekers, backcountry explorers, and more.

Advanced skiers can try steep skiing classes or take a private lesson with Extremely Canadian at Whistler Blackcomb. If you’ve dreamed of skiing with an Olympian, you can do that, too. Both Whistler Blackcomb and Big White offer opportunities to learn tricks and tips from the professionals.

PLAY

Need some variety? Try ice skating, tube parks, horse-drawn sleigh rides, marshmallow roasts, snowshoe adventures, or follow a team of sled dogs through the forest.

At Whistler Blackcomb, soar above a snow-covered rainforest on a zipline tour, or bungee jump over a rushing glacial river. SilverStar offers mini-snowmobiles for kids who want to go fast in powder. Climb an 18-metre (60-foot) ice tower at Big White, or ride a fat-tire bike through the snow in Fernie.

Apex offers both a 1-kilometre (0.6-mile) skating loop and an NHL-sized hockey rink. Big White is home to an Olympic-sized outdoor rink, and at Whistler Village you can skate under festive lights. For a true Canadian experience, skate on a frozen lake in the middle of the forest, such as Brewer’s Pond at SilverStar.

Kids' centres, indoor rock climbing, and movie nights take the fun inside. And nannies and babysitting services make some grown-up time possible.

STAY

BC’s resorts make it easy to bring the family. Mountainside accommodation and ski-in/ski-out villages are abundant—almost all the lodging at Apex and SilverStar is ski-in/ski-out, for example. Send the young ones off to ski school, leave the teens to sleep in, and head for the slopes.

Features like multiple bedrooms, kitchens, in-suite laundry, connecting rooms, and swimming pools are easy to find. Most don’t charge extra for kids, and some let you bring Fido. And just because you have a kitchen, doesn’t mean you have to use it. A range of food options is usually close by, and many restaurants deliver.

Other perks include ski valet, in-house ski rentals, and village shuttles. If self-catering is more your style, independent chalets like the ones offered at Sun Peaks or the A-frame cabins at The Village at Red Mountain will do the trick. The Panorama Springs Pools offers slides, splash pads, hot tubs, and saunas to all lodging guests.
